Backing Up Mac Files

It is imperative that you know how to back up the documents and files you have created on your MacBook.  You should back up your files on a regular basis, but especially before you turn in your MacBook for the summer.  Your MacBook will be re-imaged over the summer.  ALL of your files will be erased!

Follow the link below to view a video on how to back up folders to your network folder.

You may only back up your school related documents to the school network location.  Do not back up your personal music, photo, and movie files to the network.

Before you back up, make sure you are connected to the network. To do this, make sure your student number appears over your network folder in your dock.  If you see a question mark instead of that folder, you will need to log out and log back in at school.

Open your home folder (with the house icon).  Then drag your files and folders that contain school work and projects to your network folder on your dock.

You may back up all of your files to a personal flash drive or external hard drive.  The easiest way to back up everything at once is to navigate to the home folder (with the house icon).  Drag that home folder to the flash drive or external drive.  The backup device must have enough free space to hold all of these files.  If it does not, you will need to be selective in what you back up, or use a larger flash or hard drive.  Remember that music, video, and image files can take up a lot of space.

If you need additional assistance with this process, please visit the Help Desk.  Any of the Help Desk personnel will be happy to help.
