Michael D. Henderson - Director of Bands

Mr. Michael Henderson has been the director at Chase High School since July 2006. Mr. Henderson began his music career at the age of 7 when he began taking piano lessons. He then went on to play tenor saxophone in middle school and high school. He marched 4 years at East Rutherford High School, under the direction of Ms. Kathy Weir, holding the position of Drum Major for 2 years. Mr. Henderson continued his passion for music while he attended Western Carolina University. He became a member of “The Pride of the Mountains” Marching Band, under the direction of Mr. Bob Buckner. He played piano in the “Soul Train” for 3 years, and played baritone for 1 year. He also held a section leader position for 1 year. He then moved up to Staff Coordinator for the band where he acted as an assistant band director, gaining experience in all aspects of marching band, on and off the field. His principle instrument was alto saxophone, which he studied under Dr. John West. He also performed with the WCU Symphonic Band, under the direction of Dr. Dan Cherry, the WCU Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. John West, the WCU Saxophone Quartet, the WCU Jazz Band, under the direction of Mr. Pavel Wlosok, and the WCU Concert Choir, under the direction of Dr. Robert Holquist. He graduated in 2006 from the Honors College with a B.S.Ed in Music Education. He has worked with numerous bands as a clinician. He has written drill for many bands across NC. Mr. Henderson is a member of MENC: The National Association for Music Education, the WNCBDA, and the NCMEA and attends their annual conference in Winston-Salem where he learns new and innovative teaching techniques. Mr. Henderson also holds a Masters Degree in Music Education from East Carolina University. He has had the honor of being named Chase High School Teacher of the Year for 2011-2012 and 2014-2015.  He was also named Rutherford County Teacher of the Year for 2014-2015.  He was named a semifinalist for the GRAMMY Music Educator Award in 2017.  He currently lives in Forest City with his wife, Jenn, and their children Cara, Gavin, Ellie, and Andy.

Mrs. Jenn Henderson - Color Guard Choreographer/Coordinator

Mrs. Jenn Henderson serves as the choreographer for the Chase High School Trojan Marching Band Color Guard. She is originally from Forest City, NC. She began her fine arts career at the age of 3, taking dance lessons at Diane Griffin Dance Academy. From there she moved on to take lessons and compete with Little Broadway Dance Studio, winning many Grand National Titles in dance. She began her career in marching band while in 8th grade as she marched trumpet. She then went on to march 4 years of color guard at East Rutherford High School, under the direction of Ms Kathy Weir, holding leadership positions 3 of those years. She continued to advance her trumpet and alto sax playing abilities in concert and jazz band. After graduation, she continued her guard experience when she became a member of the Western Carolina University “Pride of the Mountains” Marching Band for 5 years, under the direction of Mr. Bob Buckner, receiving the “Leadership Award” in 2004 and holding leadership positions for 2 years. She was also a member of WCU’s winter guard. She graduated in 2007 with a B.S. in Interior Design. She also has training in DCI (Drum Corp International) as she trained with Spirit from JSU Drum and Bugle Corp in 2005. She has worked with many color guards all around NC since 2004, some of which have performed with BOA (Bands of America). She has taught, choreographed and consulted with Tuscola High, East Duplin High, A.C. Reynolds High, Franklin High, East Rutherford High, West Iredell High and Gardner-Webb University, where she helped start the marching band and color guard program along side the late Mr. Sid Haton. She has also had the opportunity to take dance and choreography classes from many nationally known choreographers, such as Mia Michaels, Shane Sparks, Dave Scott, and Lourie-Ann Gibson. In the past, she has served as dance instructor at POPS Performing Arts Academy and Toe 2 Toe Dance Academy. She continues to choreograph for many high school guards around the state and instructs/choreographs full-time with the Chase High School color guard. She is the wife of Mr. Michael Henderson, the proud parent of Cara, Gavin, Ellie, and Andy.
